Shine A Light On Trauma (S.A.L.O.T.)

The meaning of the word Salot has 3 different definitions however for this purpose I will use the plaque definition which is defined as a very dangerous disease that spreads rapidly and often causes death. In the black community we continue to cover our eyes, close our mouths and block out things we hear because we have seen so much, we have heard so much and we are often told that "snitches get stitches" or to keep "our" business in the household. We have been traumatized over and over again so we naturally start ignoring it and chalking it up as this must be normal. All the while we are having major outburst, we cringe when someone hugs us, we want to be isolated for days, we bottle all of our emotions up until one day we explode, when conversations get difficult we take the flight or fight response; all of these issues continue to fester for years and we never seek help. Unresolved trauma will eventually lead to mental health illness and untreated mental health illness will have long term effects that could eventually lead to death.

Today and everyday after, I challenge you to uncover your mouth and speak out against anything that you deem unhealthy or wrong, I challenge you to open your eyes and let people know that you clearly see what they are doing and it's not right, I challenge you to uncover your ears and listen to yourself; who knows their body, feelings, emotions better than you do. Today I want you to start the healing process and Shine A Light On Trauma, No one can tell your story better than you.
