Let's Tell Our Own Stories Before They Tell Them For Us

Updated: May 3, 2020

Since I have been in education, time after time I have witnessed professional development go wrong for students in our underserved communities. Yes, our counterparts have more degrees and initials behind their names so I guess that makes them the expert, right? Have they grew up in our neighborhoods, have they experienced what we have experienced, have they been subject to the inequities, injustices and continual racism that has been bestowed upon us? However, we continue to hear them tell our stories for us. When do we start telling our own stories, when do we raise our hand in a conference, seminar, professional development and say that's your story, not mine; that's what you read and studied, not what you lived; that's what you saw on the news and on social media, not what you seen on everyday basis? I do understand that their are individuals who want to help curb the inequities and disproportionately's that happens in education, the justice system, health care, etc. especially now, since the pandemic hit however if you talk to any black or brown person in the underserved communities pre-pandemic you would have known we needed help long before

Covid-19 took place. This is something different but nothing new, we had many unprecedented times all throughout history, ask us our stories and we will tell you.
